Fostering relations
To crystallize the relationships and depiction of our Canadian energy modelling capacity, the Initiative will support, in collaboration with local researchers, three regional workshops to maintain the momentum created by the workshop that already took place in Montreal. These workshops will bring together local energy modellers and users to expand the inventory, convene the modelling community, identify region-specific needs, and ensure that the proposed platform is effective as Canada moves towards a Clean Electric Future.

Central workshop
The September 12th workshop in Ottawa gladly received a group of about 60 people of varied perspectives and disciplinary backgrounds. The first in a series of three, this event marks the opening of the discussion on the mobilization of Canadian modelling expertise for policy creation in an electrification context as well as the first steps in the development of a national energy systems modeling network.
Western workshop
Discussions in Ottawa’s workshop continued at the University of Victoria with a new group of motivated modellers and policy makers. The planning: a panel presenting the Policy Makers’ point of view concerning the achievement of climate action targets, an overview of Energy models and a case study to try to identify the needs in this area.
Atlantic workshop
To close the workshop series of the initiative, the Atlantic Region Energy Modelling Workshop was held on November 12 at the Wu Conference Centre. There were 59 participants, from regional electrical power utilities—including Emera, NB Power, NS Power, Maritime Electric and Saint John Energy—as well as from academic and political sectors. The event was followed by a one-day Short Course on Modelling of Renewable Power at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) the very next day.
National forum
A National Energy Systems Modelling Forum have been held in December 2019, bringing around 100 people together. It has served to present the modelling results of the funded projects, discuss how to build on them to prepare a first Canadian modellers vision for 2030-2050, as well as to react to a few proposals for building a sustainable modelling community able to inform governments and stakeholders about the electrified future.
